Throughout September and October, we’re celebrating the art of some of our youngest locals from prep to year 6 at Corpus Christi Primary School in Kingsville.

Thanks to Brittany, the school’s art teacher, our walls are popping with colour and excitement. Brittany described the inspiration behind the varied artwork in detail, which is evident from the individual displays.

Pattern Paint Monsters

Prep students created their own colourful Pattern Paint Monsters. Students selected a monster body and designed their own arms and legs before filling their monsters with a variety of lines and patterns using oil pastels. They then experimented with watercolour paint, discovering how oil pastel and watercolour interact because oil and water don’t mix! Students also developed their fine-motor skills through cutting and pasting as they assembled their playful monster creations.

Lily pads

Inspired by the beautiful pond paintings of French Impressionist artist Claude Monet, Grade 1/2 students created their own vibrant water lily artworks. Students experimented with colour and texture to create their pond backgrounds by layering strips of crepe paper, spraying them with water and allowing them to dry. Once the crepe paper was removed, they revealed unexpected patterns and textures beneath. Students then developed their cutting and pasting skills to create lily pads and added delicate tissue-paper flowers to complete their ponds.

Ken Done “Water” inspired artworks

Grade 3/4 students explored the work of iconic Australian artist Ken Done, whose bright and energetic artworks celebrate Australian landscapes, beaches, water and Sydney Harbour. Inspired by Done’s distinctive use of bold colour and expressive lines, students created their own artworks featuring Australian coastal scenes. They experimented with oil pastels, crayons, watercolour paints and food colouring mixed with water to create colourful and dynamic backgrounds.

Skies & Silhouettes

Our Grade 5/6 students have been developing their drawing and painting skills through an exploration of colour, space and atmosphere. Students experimented with watercolour techniques to create expressive and atmospheric skies, before applying their understanding of the art element space to introduce a silhouette in the foreground. By contrasting the detailed, colourful skies with simple silhouettes, students explored how the placement and scale of objects can create a sense of depth within an artwork.
