Our Village and Community Bank Seddon are Transforming Refugee Lives

News

In a world where countless individuals are forced to flee their homes due to conflict and persecution, the quest for a safe haven becomes a desperate struggle. Community groups established under the National Community Refugee Integration and Settlement Pilot (CRISP) have stepped up to provide essential support to refugees in their first year in Australia.

One such Yarraville-based group “Our Village”, driven by a shared commitment to making a tangible difference in the lives of refugees, has been making an impact with the backing of Bendigo Bank Community Bank Seddon. Through their combined efforts, they have successfully welcomed and supported two refugees, including one named Eli, who has found a new beginning in Melbourne.

In the latest news, CRISP is here to stay! The Australian Government has officially announced that the Community Refugee Integration and Settlement Pilot will become a permanent part of Australia’s humanitarian migration program. We are proud to be a part of that story and extend our thanks to Emma Stewart, one of the co-founders of Our Village, for sharing the story of their two year journey below.

A Community Effort with a Heart

Our Village focuses on providing practical and emotional support. This includes everything from temporary accommodation before government assistance kicks in to helping refugees adjust to life in Melbourne. Their goal is to offer a warm welcome and the necessary support for a successful transition into their new life.

Fundraising and Support

The Community Bank Seddon played an important role during the fundraising process by sponsoring Our Village, enabling them to extend their support to those in need. One of their most impactful stories is that of Eli, a refugee from Syria. Eli’s journey to Australia was marked by extreme danger, prompting him to arrive at Melbourne Airport eight hours before his scheduled flight.

His arrival was an emotional moment. The initial anxiety of not knowing how the relationship would unfold was quickly dispelled. When he turned and saw the group for the first time standing there waving, and holding welcome signs, a beautiful smile broke on his face and it cracked open their hearts. From that moment on, the group felt a strong need to care for him, even though they hardly knew him.

A New Beginning

Eli’s story is both inspiring and heartwarming. Known for his presence on TikTok, his love of fashion and being an outspoken queer identities Eli’s journey was supported by funds from Seddon Community Bank, which were used to cover essential needs such as accommodation, driving lessons, and setting up a home. Before arriving in Australia, Eli had been anxious about what to expect, reflecting on his fears and hopes for a new life.

The Our Village team worked hard to prepare for Eli’s arrival. They set up a home and a plan to meet with various essential services in his first week to make his transition as seamless as possible.

A Promising Future

Today, Eli is making remarkable progress. He is studying English diligently, has learned to ride a bike in just one day, and has obtained his learner’s driving license. His determination extends beyond personal achievements; Eli aspires to work in a field where he can help others, planning to study for a profession in aged care next year. His kindness and gentle nature have shone through, making it no surprise that he has found joy and friendship in his new community.

Eli has also found stability in his personal life. He has settled into a permanent home, built friendships, and even found a partner, reflecting the deep sense of belonging he now feels. He has started a part-time job working with a children’s disability service during school holidays, further demonstrating his commitment to making a positive impact.

Looking Ahead

The CRISP initiative aims to provide a superior experience for refugees and Our Village, with the help of Community Bank Seddon, has offered additional personalised care and support and a ready-made community.

As Our Village continues to support Eli and others like him, they are excited to see where the future will lead. The partnership with Community Bank Seddon has not only provided crucial resources but has also strengthened the bond between communities and those seeking refuge.

In closing, Our Village extends heartfelt thanks to the Community Bank Seddon for their invaluable support. The journey of helping refugees is ongoing, and with continued dedication, we look forward to seeing many more success stories unfold.
