Earlier in the year, we were pleased to support the Kensington Stockyard Food Garden to obtain almost all the 250 seedlings we needed for the 16 new biofilta beds which were planted out at our community planting day. These plants have now been harvested and the beds recently replanted their own seedlings. Usually they try to grow their own seedlings, but the installation of new biofilta beds put a huge demand on volunteer member resources.
Their latest exciting project is Mush Fest – A Festival of Fungi – to be held over a weekend in October – Saturday 14th / Sunday 15th – at Kensington Stockyard Food Garden.
The Saturday event also coincides with Kensington Stockyard Food Garden’s 5th year anniversary when we will celebrate 5 years of community gardening in addition to bringing the community together around a central theme of fungi.
There will be a community market of up to 10 stall holders including the offering of delicious vegan mushroom bahn mi, kombucha goodness infused with fantastic fungi, fresh farm mushrooms, plants and other goodies. Workshops include mushrooms under the microscope, brewing your own kombucha, cooking a mushroom risotto and gardening with King Stropharia, the garden giant mushroom.
The Sunday program will be held at the Ken/Flem on Smithfield Road opposite the Kensington Stockyard Food Garden and will include a program of expert speakers, a keynote panel discussion and another mushroom cooking workshop. The day will explore the theme: Mushroom Medicine for human health and planetary wellbeing: Just a passing shroom boom or the real McCoy?
