We were proud to support the Refugee Migrant Children’s Centre during our recent Community Pitch event, who are working to help provide skills to refugee children living in our local community.
The Refugee Migrant Children’s Centre has a program called Sidekicks which is a weekly mentoring program for refugees and migrant children aged 5 – 12 who now call Australia home. The program tackles a complex set of barriers that are unique to these children as they settle in Australia, giving them the tools to thrive and ensure their backgrounds and socio-economic circumstance don’t dictate their future.
The children benefit from weekly sessions with trained volunteer mentors focusing on each child’s needs that have been identified in partnership with parents, carers and their school. The program has run since 2014 and has demonstrated results in improving English literacy, educational outcomes, engagement in learning and social connections with peers and role models as well as confidence and self-esteem.
